Senior Center Month Open House

Thursday, September 23rd, 9 am to 4 pm

Join us as wSe celebrate National Senior Center Month with special programs, tours, refreshments, and more. This year’s theme is Senior Centers: Your Place to Connect.

Special Events/Presentations
10 am: Stories of Rochester
Rochester has grown & changed incredibly since chartered in 1858. Many places no longer exist or have changed significantly. Despite change, Rochester retains its small-town-ness. Through the use of vintage postcards, learn about the development of our remarkable community. Whether you have lived in Rochester all of your life or are a first-time visitor, this presentation is a fascinating look back into our unique community.
Presented by Alan Calavano.
Free, open to the public, no RSVP required.

2 pm: Junk in the Trunks, Cash in the Attic
These days “junk” in your attic can be like money in the bank. There’s a market for everything from old Mickey Mouse Club records & Beetles 45’s to your grandmother’s cardboard laundry soapboxes. Too many items and don’t know how to organize your junk from treasures? Do you know how to categorize or where to sell your items?

School Days at the Rural School in America
Tuesday, September 21, Noon
There would be hide and seek in the cornfield, Annie Over over the schoolhouse, cool water from the stone jar and communal dipper, wooden desks with the carved names of previous scholars, and the old stove in the center of the room.  If a student toiled long and successfully enough at his history, arithmetic, geography, music, hygiene, grammar, and penmanship (remember those interminable circles?), he could gain the ultimate prize, his eighth grade diploma.

Those were the days when women teachers, not much older than some of their students, had to agree not to “marry or keep company with a man friend during the week except as an escort to church services.”
Men teachers, however, were allowed to “take one evening each week for courting purposes or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.”

For this program, we’ll take a little time to sing a few of those old schoolhouse musical classics like “School Days” and “Good Morning To You,” and enjoy a collection of illustrations from across the country.

Presenter: Dale Blanshan
RSVP required by Wednesday, Sept. 15th.
Lunch: ½ Roast Beef Sandwich, Chicken Dumpling Soup, Cookie
Cost: $7.50 (includes lunch)

To Register for either Lunch & Learn, visit us online or call the Business Office at 507-287-1404.
